Chelsea have set their sights on Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs and are “very keen” to secure his signature when the summer transfer window opens.

Sunderland Set £50m Price Tag as Chelsea Circle for Roefs

The 23-year-old shot-stopper has enjoyed an impressive debut season in the Premier League following his move from the Eredivisie last summer.

Roefs has played a pivotal role in Sunderland’s unexpected push for top-flight survival, with his consistent performances helping to all but guarantee the Black Cats’ status in the division for another year.

CaughtOffside indicate that the Blues view the Dutchman as a long-term solution to their ongoing issues in goal.

Current number one Robert Sanchez has faced increasing scrutiny following a series of unconvincing displays.

While a solid performance in the Club World Cup previously bought him some leeway, his recent demotion for the clash against Aston Villa suggests his time as the regular starter may be coming to an end.

Chelsea’s recruitment team believes Roefs fits the modern profile they seek. Standing out for his comfort as a sweeper-keeper, the Sunderland man excels at handling crosses and set-pieces.

His technical ability with the ball at his feet, honed during his development in the Netherlands, also makes him a strong fit for a team that likes to build play from the back.

Sunderland are under no pressure to sell their star asset and are expected to demand a fee in the region of £50 million. However, Chelsea possess the financial muscle to meet that valuation.

The potential lure of Champions League football next season—with the Blues still in contention for a top-four finish and alive in the latter stages of the competition—could also give them a significant advantage in negotiations.

With the club having focused recent spending on attacking reinforcements, addressing the goalkeeping position now appears to be the top priority.

If the Blues can finalise a deal, Roefs would provide competition and a long-term heir between the sticks at Stamford Bridge.
