While Marc Cucurella has established himself as a vital component of the team this season, the club recognizes a lack of a reliable alternative for the Spanish defender.
According to reports from Italian publication Il Messaggero, Chelsea view the former Arsenal player as a potential solution and were also keen on signing him during the recent summer transfer window.
A significant factor in Chelsea’s renewed pursuit is Lazio’s current financial situation. Three months ago, the Italian club’s £43 million valuation of Tavares was considered too high by the London club.
However, with Lazio now needing to address financial compliance issues, they are expected to lower their asking price for the 25-year-old in January.
Convincing Tavares to accept a back-up role behind Cucurella presents a potential challenge for Chelsea. The Portuguese defender has been a regular starter for Lazio, beginning five of their six Serie A matches this season.
Nevertheless, the prospect of a more lucrative financial package and the chance to play regularly in the Champions League could persuade him to return to the Premier League.
