Chelsea are considering terminating Raheem Sterling’s contract to remove his significant wages from their books after failing to offload him during the summer transfer window.
Chelsea’s Sterling Dilemma: Pay £30m in Wages or a £20m+ Termination Fee
The 30-year-old winger, who joined Chelsea from Manchester City in 2022 for £47.5 million, has struggled to meet expectations at Stamford Bridge.
After falling out of favor under manager Enzo Maresca, Sterling spent the 2024-25 season on loan at Arsenal, where he managed just one goal in 28 appearances.
Despite interest from clubs like Fulham, a move failed to materialize due to Sterling’s wage demands. He currently earns approximately £300,000 per week and is unwilling to take a significant pay cut.
Chelsea are now exploring the possibility of terminating his contract two years early. This move would require the club to pay Sterling a settlement estimated between £10 million and £20 million, effectively covering a portion of his remaining wages.
If no agreement is reached, Sterling may be forced to train with Chelsea’s reserves until the January transfer window opens.
Potential destinations for the forward include clubs in Saudi Arabia or Turkey, where the transfer windows are still open and teams might be capable of meeting his salary requirements.
This situation highlights Chelsea’s efforts to streamline their squad and manage financial resources, even if it means incurring a substantial short-term cost.
