Marc Guiu was fully recalled by Chelsea from Sunderland following his loan at the Stadium of Light. Guiu only joined Sunderland this transfer window after being promoted, and the agreement was announced on August 6, which made the recall more difficult.
The recall negotiations for the teenager come after Chelsea forward Liam Delap was hurt during Saturday’s 2-0 victory over Fulham. During the first half, Delap seemed to be gripping his right leg when he drew up. Following the game, head coach Enzo Maresca expressed his concern that Delap may miss up to eight weeks of action.
Chelsea notified Bayern Munich that they would not be moving forward with the intended €80 million loan of Nicolas Jackson to the Bundesliga team, which included a buyout option, after Delap’s injury. Subsequently, The Athletic claimed that the agreement to buy Jackson had been reached.
The 19-year-old Guiu has joined Sunderland and made two Premier League substitute appearances. In their loss against Huddersfield Town in the Carabao Cup, he also started and scored.
The Spaniard scored six goals in 16 games in 2024–25 after joining Chelsea from Barcelona last summer. The unexpected move by Chelsea to consider returning Guiu from a season-long loan at Sunderland may cause additional speculation as the transfer window draws to a close.
The drama of Jackson’s approval to fly to Germany for a medical examination before a loan to Bayern came on Saturday. However, Chelsea changed their mind after Delap hurt his hamstring against Fulham.
However, it looks like Bayern has given up on the 24-year-old, securing Jackson’s return to Stamford Bridge. After agreeing to join Sunderland for the campaign earlier this month, the youngster has already made three appearances for the team. Five days ago, he scored his first goal against Huddersfield.
At Chelsea, Guiu is well regarded. They did, in fact, decline proposals to sell him outright this summer. However, in order to support his growth, they wanted him to play regular first-team games elsewhere.
Delap’s hamstring issue will be scanned within the following day or two. Guiu’s return to the team will undoubtedly offer more than adequate coverage while he is out.
