Chelsea captain Reece James has acknowledged that he still needs to shake off some “rust” following his return to action in the club’s final pre-season friendly against Real Sociedad.
Reece James Admits to Rust Despite Chelsea Return
The Blues skipper featured in Saturday’s 3-1 victory at Stamford Bridge, marking his first appearance since returning from an extended break.
James had been given additional time off after England’s run to the World Cup semi-final, only rejoining the squad four weeks ago following the pre-season tour of North America.
“The break’s been pretty short so I felt pretty good out there,” James said after the match.
“The conditions were tough, it was super hot, but I’m feeling good. It’s still early, there was a bit of rust still to come off, but it was a good step.”
The 26-year-old defender admitted the truncated summer break has presented challenges for the squad’s fitness levels, with Chelsea working under new management for the first time since Xabi Alonso took charge at the start of July.
“It was a short break, probably shorter than everyone would have liked, but I’m delighted to be back and the new season’s going to be getting under way pretty soon,” James added.
Alonso recently praised the leadership qualities James brings to the training ground, and the Spaniard appears to be leaning heavily on his captain to help implement his tactical vision throughout the squad.
“It means a lot coming from a manager and an ex-player of his calibre,” James responded.
“Hopefully I can give my all for him and deliver when I’m needed most.”
Despite the busy pre-season schedule that involved extensive travelling, James expressed optimism about the squad’s unity and chemistry heading into the new campaign.
“The boys have just come off the pre-season tour which was a lot of travelling, a lot of games, but from what I’ve seen everyone’s settled in well,” he confirmed.
“It’s only been four or five days, it’s been super short but I’m enjoying it very much so far and that’s the same for the boys.”
Chelsea begin their Premier League campaign against Fulham at Craven Cottage next Monday.
Alonso’s side will aim to challenge for the title after finishing tenth last season, with their focus now entirely on domestic competitions following their failure to qualify for European football in 2025-26
