Chelsea are reportedly plotting a surprise swoop for Liverpool’s highly-rated backup goalkeeper, Caoimhin Kelleher, in a move that could shake up the Premier League’s transfer dynamics.
Chelsea Eyeing Shock Move for Liverpool Goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher
The Blues are said to value the Republic of Ireland international at around £35 million, a fee Liverpool would likely accept despite reservations about strengthening a direct rival.
Kelleher, 25, has made a name for himself as one of Europe’s most promising keepers, shining in crucial moments for Liverpool.
Twice he has starred in EFL Cup final victories over Chelsea at Wembley, showcasing his composure under pressure and ability to deliver on the big stage.
Yet, despite his talents, he remains firmly behind Alisson Becker in the pecking order at Anfield.
The Cork-born shot-stopper has openly expressed his desire to step out of the shadows and claim a starting role, something Liverpool cannot promise with Alisson entrenched as first-choice.
With Kelleher turning 26 this month, former Ireland keeper Shay Given believes it’s time for him to take a leap of faith.
“Caoimhin has proven he has the talent to be a Premier League No. 1,” Given told The Mirror.
“But he needs to move on if he wants to achieve that. He’s been loyal to Liverpool, but sometimes you have to put your career first.”
Chelsea, under manager Enzo Maresca, appear eager to offer Kelleher that opportunity.
Despite having an abundance of goalkeepers on their books—including Robert Sanchez, Kepa Arrizabalaga, and rising star Gabriel Slonina—the Blues are reportedly considering Kelleher as a long-term solution between the posts.
Kelleher has played just eight games for Liverpool this season, primarily filling in during Alisson’s recent injury layoff. While he is Ireland’s undisputed No. 1, he finds his club opportunities frustratingly limited.
Liverpool, currently leading the Premier League, are reluctant to lose Kelleher but may see the deal as inevitable given his ambitions.
For Chelsea, securing Kelleher could be a shrewd move, potentially solving their goalkeeping conundrum while adding proven quality. Fans will eagerly watch how this transfer saga unfolds.
