Chelsea have set their sights on Atlético Madrid midfielder Pablo Barrios as their primary January transfer target, with the Premier League club preparing a massive €100 million (£85.6m) offer to bring the Spaniard to Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea Plot €100m January Move for Atlético Madrid’s Pablo Barrios

The west London club’s urgent need for midfield reinforcement stems from a chaotic summer transfer window.

Argentine international Enzo Fernández completed a last-minute record-breaking move to Manchester City, leaving a significant void in Xabi Alonso’s squad.

Chelsea quickly identified AS Monaco’s Lamine Camara as the ideal replacement, and the deal appeared to be on the verge of completion.

However, the Monaco board dramatically pulled the plug at the final stage, leaving the Blues furious and without a direct replacement for Fernández.

With the January window now in their sights, Chelsea’s recruitment team have turned their attention to La Liga.

According to reports from Diario Sport, citing English sources, Pablo Barrios has emerged as “the favourite player to fill the vacancy of the Argentine,” with Chelsea willing to offer €100 million for his services.

Xabi Alonso is said to be a huge admirer of the 23-year-old, believing his technical quality and tactical intelligence make him the perfect fit for the Premier League.

The Chelsea manager views Barrios as the ideal partner for Moises Caicedo in midfield, capable of transitioning play quickly and thriving under pressure.

However, securing Barrios will prove far from straightforward. Diego Simeone considers the midfielder a cornerstone of his setup at the Metropolitano, and Atletico Madrid currently have no intention of entertaining bids for their engine room standout.

Barrios signed a contract until 2030 and boasts a staggering €500 million release clause, giving the Spanish club enormous leverage in any potential negotiation.

Chelsea’s aggressive summer sales generating nearly £390 million and making them the biggest revenue-earning club in Europe have placed them in a strong financial position to pursue such a deal.

Whether that proves enough to tempt Atlético into selling one of their prized assets remains to be seen.
