A few more new faces will be welcomed to Stamford Bridge by Enzo Maresca before the Blues depart for the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States. Chelsea will contend for yet another trophy next week.
The West Londoners, who were selected for Group D, will first play Los Angeles FC and then Flamengo. Maresca’s team will then take on ES Tunis in an attempt to advance to the tournament’s knockout stages.
Marca claims that Chelsea is still interested in signing Athletic Club de Bilbao’s Nico Williams. Williams, 22, is a possible possibility for the Blues, who are looking to add a left winger with a right foot this summer. He was a standout player for Athletic Club the previous season.
The Spanish team, however, is keen to retain the Euro 2024 champion and has extended an offer to him that includes a significant wage increase. Athletic Club is eager for Williams to commit to the San Mamés team for the long run, as his present contract is scheduled to end in June 2027.
Romano says Chelsea still want Williams
Romano Fabrizio reports Nico Williams is a target for Chelsea and Arsenal as well, although both English teams believe that the salary situation is quite difficult. Right now, Williams’ most frequently cited team is Bayern Munich, who also seem to be the most likely to be his next destination.
Given how much work remains, we won’t get overly thrilled about Chelsea’s involvement just yet. Prior to choosing us over Bayern and Arsenal, Williams would need to decline re-signing offers from his current team. Then, to get him, we would have to pay him enormous salaries.
However, that provision still exists, so for the time being we may dream. How much the sporting directors are ready to deviate from or bend their own rules for players is put to the test here. Given that they would be receiving a great deal on the transfer price, would they break their pay structure for Williams?
Unfortunately, we don’t suspect so. He is the kind of seasoned, elite player who might have a significant influence immediately on a team looking to go to the next level.
