Chelsea will step up their efforts to sign Marc Guehi, the star of Crystal Palace, if they make it to the Champions League on the last day of the season.
According to former Man United and Blackburn chief scout Mick Brown, who is still very well-connected in the game, the 24-year-old is one of Chelsea’s top center-back targets, he exclusively told Football Insider.
The Blues know they will probably lose their chance to play in the Champions League if they lose their match against Nottingham Forest on May 25 at the City Ground.
Despite Crystal Palace’s FA Cup victory, Football Insider reported that Guehi’s future there has not changed as he approaches the last year of his contract.
Even though Palace rejected a £70 million offer in January, there are rumors that the England international will be permitted to leave Selhurst Park this summer.
Brown made this announcement after telling Football Insider in February that Palace had started making plans to replace Guehi as they got ready for his departure.
Chelsea Confident of Signing Marc Guehi
Chelsea is not the only one pursuing this. Tottenham is still a major admirer of Guehi, but Liverpool is thought to be the front-runner to recruit him. Newcastle also looked into a trade last summer, while Spurs had their bid of £70 million turned down in January.
But Chelsea is still optimistic. In order to guarantee a return to Stamford Bridge, Chelsea thinks Guehi will turn down offers from others. Since their interest in Dean Huijsen has waned, Chelsea is now focused on Guehi and wants to sign him before their competitors do.
Marc Guehi is not only a top-tier Premier League defender but also a Cobham product who is approaching his prime with the maturity of an experienced leader and who knows the club’s culture.
He and Levi Colwill could be able to address Chelsea’s long-standing defensive imbalance. They are both physically powerful, tactically smart, and at ease in possession—modern center-backs for a modern game. With the correct growth and coaching consistency, this kind of collaboration might serve as the foundation for a team that is vying for a championship.
This could finally be the move that gives Chalobah the opportunity to succeed. Palace has a more stable system for Premier League football, and he might play a key role in their goals.
