Chelsea is making progress in its pursuit of Jamie Gittens of Borussia Dortmund. According to Mike McGrath, the Premier League team has started negotiations with Dortmund in hopes of signing the Englishman before the Club World Cup.
Arsenal has also expressed interest in signing Gittens, who Borussia Dortmund anticipates leaving the team in the summer even if the team has secured Champions League football, according to our colleagues at Get German Football News.
Chelsea’s interest in Gittens follows Jadon Sancho’s uncertain future. After placing fourth, they must either pay a £5 million penalty fee or purchase Sancho for between £20 million and £25 million, per McGrath. The former Borussia Dortmund star is now on loan from Manchester United.
It seems that Chelsea will focus on Gittens instead of the 25-year-old, who finished the previous season with five goals and ten assists in 42 appearances. According to Ruhr Nachrichten, Dortmund would have a hard time turning down a bid of between €50 million and €60 million.
Chelsea in talks over £50m transfer for England wonderkid
The German team has demonstrated that they are prepared to part with their best players for the proper price, frequently benefitting greatly from the deal. For enormous quantities of money, they sold Bellingham, Erling Haaland, and Sancho, among others. Before spending the season on loan at Chelsea, where he has been erratic and now faces an unclear future, the latter transferred to Manchester United.
Chelsea’s Premier League finish means they have a contractual obligation to purchase him for between £20 million and £25 million. They need to pay a £5 million exit penalty cost if they decide to withdraw.
The fact that Chelsea qualified for the Champions League on the last day of the season will help them recruit this summer. In order to strengthen their attack, they are in a strong position to win the race for Liam Delap, who is expected to sign from Ipswich Town in a £30 million deal.
Due to their bloated roster and ongoing investments, the Blues will have to offload a number of players this summer. In spite of this, they have already started their hiring process and haven’t wasted any time in the early summer transfer window.
