Chelsea have begun negotiations with Antionio Rudiger over a new deal.
Sky Sports claims that the Blues want to add three years to the defender’s current deal until June 2022 that will also include a one-year extension.
Rudiger arrived from AS Roma in 2017 and has emerged as their best centre-back over the course of the past three seasons. He took a bit of time to adjust to the demands of the Premier League but did make 27 appearances on his debut campaign.
Injuries have kept him for majority of this season but the German brought back some stability in the Chelsea back four on his return. The problem for Frank Lampard has been to find a balance amongst his current crop of players. Kurt Zouma has been susceptible to making mistakes while Fikayo Tomori still developing. Andreas Christensen has been solid but he still lacks physicial strength and technicality of playing out from the back.
Rudiger at 27 is their natural leader and a very important piece in their top-four hopes this term. His dynamic abilities make him a very valuable part of this Chelsea side. Extending his contract is highly necessary since Bundesliga giants, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund are monitoring his situation at Stamford Bridge. If Chelsea were to enter the final two years of his contract, they could be forced into selling him.
