According to Italian publication Calciomercato, Chelsea midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka has reportedly consented to a January transfer to AC Milan. This possible departure may represent a much-needed fresh start for a player whose career has stagnated at Stamford Bridge, even though the transfer is still pending Chelsea’s approval.
The path Chukwuemeka took to get to Chelsea was one of opportunity and promise. The Austrian midfielder, who was priced at €8 million when he was signed from Aston Villa in 2022, was hailed as talented. His progress, however, has been limited by injuries and managerial changes. The 21-year-old, despite his skill, has only played 63 minutes this season in all competitions. He has struggled to establish himself under new manager Enzo Maresca, as evidenced by his omission from the Premier League matchday teams.
Chelsea midfielder eyes AC Milan move
According to the Italian publication Calciomercato, Chukwuemeka has already consented to sign a loan agreement with AC Milan and is awaiting the completion of the transaction. The young midfield player is reportedly a favourite of Milan’s technical director, Geoffrey Moncada, who intends to offer a permanent transfer option. Chukwuemeka, if the trade is finalized, will become the latest Chelsea player to succeed at San Siro, following in the footsteps of Christian Pulisic, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, and Fikayo Tomori.
Celtic is apparently leading the battle to recruit the player, so Milan will have competition. For £14.9 million in 2022, Chelsea acquired Chukwuemeka from Aston Villa. In 31 games, he has only provided two goals and one assist, despite occasional displays of promise. He still has four years left on his deal, so a loan move might give him the playing time and growth he sorely needs.
