Tuesday night’s sold-out Carabao Cup quarterfinal between Cardiff City and Chelsea will take place at Cardiff City Stadium. Under Brian Barry-Murphy, the Bluebirds are in outstanding form in League One, leading the table after only four losses.
Despite the difficulty of playing one of the top teams in the nation, Cardiff will go into tomorrow night’s match with some confidence after winning their past three games against Doncaster Rovers, Stevenage, and Huddersfield Town. They have also won two of their past three League Cup games against Chelsea at their former home field, Ninian Park, and drawn one at Stamford Bridge.
The last time they played Chelsea at home in the League Cup was on October 28, 1986, and the home team won 2-1. In August and September of 1980, they also played the Blues, winning the home leg 1-0 and drawing the rematch 1-1.
Pep protégés reunite as Chelsea face Cardiff
Maresca and Barry-Murphy have comparable perspectives on the game but function at different levels. Both men share Guardiola’s desire for their side to dominate and attack, frequently through ball dominance and expansive play.
The clear distinction on Tuesday will be that Cardiff is competing in the third division of English football for the first time in 22 years, although successfully, while Maresca will have access to a team of exceptional depth that won the Uefa Conference League and Club World Cup earlier this year.
“I believe he knows exactly how he wants the game to be played. “I believe that each of us has unique characteristics,” adds Barry-Murphy. “One of the most important lessons I learnt from Man City is that you must always have your own views and methods. I want to do things my own way since I’m an independent man.”
In the opposing dugout at Cardiff City Stadium, Barry-Murphy will be familiar with more than just Maresca; the Irishman has managed a number of Chelsea players at their former clubs.
