Chelsea has agreed to a contract to transfer another player as part of their increased attempts to reduce their bloated squad. Young midfielder Lesley Ugochukwu is expected to sign a permanent contract with Burnley, who were just promoted, according to The Athletic.
Two years ago, the 21-year-old defensive midfielder paid almost £23 million to join Chelsea from Ligue 1. But in all competitions, he only made 15 appearances for the Blues.
He was one of the few bright spots in a club that was ultimately demoted from the Premier League during his season-long loan at Southampton. He played in 26 Premier League games, starting 18 of them, and made 31 appearances in all competitions.
The young French player prevailed in 55% of his ground fights and 54% of his air encounters. After showing signs of promise at Southampton, he will be trying to make a name for himself at Burnley.
Burnley reach agreement over Lesley Ugochukwu transfer
According to The Athletic’s June 3 Transfer DealSheet, Chelsea thought Ugochukwu would attract a lot of attention this summer after what was perceived as a successful loan stint at Southampton. A year after agreeing to a seven-year deal with Chelsea, Ugochukwu signed a loan deal with Southampton in August 2024.
Despite playing 31 games for the south coast club and recording three goals and three assists across all competitions, they were demoted with seven games left, making them the first team in league history to do so.
Ugochukwu is anticipated to sign a five-year contract with the Premier League newcomers after being given permission to go for a medical examination. If he performs as expected, he may be a great help to Scott Parker’s team as they try to secure a spot in the English top division.
The defender was a member of a team that Chelsea doesn’t need. Ben Chilwell and Raheem Sterling, who practice apart from the first squad, are also under scrutiny. With the Clarets also reaching an agreement to acquire striker Armando Broja, Ugochukwu may be reunited with a Chelsea teammate at Turf Moor.
