Bayern Munich target Chelsea defender Levi Colwill
According to Sky Sports Germany, Bayern Munich are starting exploratory talks with Chelsea’s teenage defender Levi Colwill.
The 21-year-old, who can play both centre-back and left-back, proved himself as an important player for Chelsea last season, playing in 32 games across all competitions.
Colwill’s outstanding play on loan at Huddersfield and Brighton placed the way for his big break at Chelsea.
His outstanding performances for Chelsea earned him a call-up to the England squad, but he nearly missed out on a position in Gareth Southgate’s Euro 2024 list.
However, Bayern Munich, who are eager at improving their defensive options, have taken notice of Colwill’s steady performances.
Despite not being the top priority for Bayern manager Vincent Kompany—who favors Bayer Leverkusen’s Jonathan Tah—Colwill remains a significant target in the Bavarians’ planned defensive overhaul. The German champions are contemplating bids for both Colwill and Tah to solidify their backline.
Tah, with only a year left on his Leverkusen contract, could be sold this summer if he does not extend his stay. His potential departure would be a significant blow to Leverkusen, where he has been a mainstay since 2015, particularly after their recent Bundesliga triumph.
Chelsea, however, are under no immediate pressure to offload Colwill. The young defender is tied to the club until 2029, having signed a substantial extension last year.
While the Blues are likely reluctant to sell such a promising talent, the financial allure of Colwill’s transfer could be tempting under the Profit and Sustainability Rules.
As Bayern Munich explore their options, Chelsea face a crucial decision regarding the future of one of their brightest young stars.
