In the summer transfer window, Barcelona might rekindle their interest in Chelsea’s Cesar Azpilicueta

Cesar Azpilicueta wouldn’t often be regarded as Chelsea’s first-choice defender, but Reece James’ ongoing ailments have caused the Spaniard to play a good amount this year.

Cesar Azpilicueta typically sits on the bench while James is well, but if James shows his fitness over the coming months, this might cause him some concern.

According to a recent report from the Spanish publication SPORT, Barcelona may renew its interest in Cesar Azpilicueta during the summer transfer window. Last summer, Barcelona tried to acquire the seasoned defender, but Chelsea decided to hold onto him.

When it was unclear whether they would be able to negotiate contracts with any players, they initiated an extension. The club might have let Azpilicueta go if they weren’t going through such a horribly difficult time. Cesar Azpilicueta signed a contract extension that will keep him with the team until 2024, but if he is given more regular playing time, he may be interested in returning to his own country.

Cesar Azpilicueta will drop even further down the pecking order at right-back if Chelsea decides to add more competition during the January transfer window, giving Barcelona a chance to pursue the seasoned defender.
