Benoit Badiashile, a French defender, has been acquired by Chelsea for £35 million from AS Monaco

The 21-year-old signed a long-term, seven-and-a-half-year contract, making him the newest player to arrive at Stamford Bridge in January.

Badiashile, one of Europe’s most promising left-footed centre backs, will contend for a berth on the Chelsea back three’s left flank. The former Monaco player has the physical attributes, domination in the air, and ball-handling skills necessary to succeed for the Blues.

With more than 130 appearances for Les Rouge et Blanc across all competitions since his debut in 2018, Badiashile has also gained experience at the highest level. He played twice for Monaco in the 2018–19 Champions League season and has 13 Europa League matches. In the Nations League match against Austria in September, Badiashile made his debut for France.

He is the team’s third acquisition during the winter transfer window, following the acquisitions of Molde FK’s David Datro Fofana and Vasco Da Gama’s Andrey Santos.

Graham Potter needs him at Stamford Bridge as he attempts to lead his struggling team back into the top half of the Premier League standings. On Thursday night, Chelsea, who is presently tenth in the league standings, will visit second-place Manchester City.
