Atletico Madrid Give Up On Chase For €40m Chelsea Defender

According to the latest reports, Atletico Madrid have given up on their chase for Chelsea fullback, Marcos Alonso.

The left-footed Spaniard who flew in from Fiorentina 3 years back is no longer the outright starter in his position. Towards the latter half of the 2018/19 campaign, Alonso saw more of his minutes get restricted by the presence of Emerson Palmieri on the pitch.

Atletico are on the hunt for a left-back and they are looking for cheaper options, as opposed to their neighbour’s €80m budget (Ferland Mendy to Real Madrid). Therefore, when Chelsea presented them with an asking price of €40m for Alonso, Diego Simeone immediately ended their pursuit of the 28-year-old.

Alonso was part of a Premier League winning side and has also won the FA Cup and the Europa League with the Blues. However, after 3 seasons in the English top-flight he is still viewed is a liable piece on the defensive end.

The 3-time Spain international is a definite threat going forward with a wicked left foot but he does not boast of great pace or any major defensive skill. Chelsea’s transfer ban makes his future at the club uncertain with Frank Lampard predicted to become the new manager as well.
