Jamie Carragher feels Chelsea could sack Maurizio Sarri after Spurs game if things don’t go well

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher feels Chelsea could pull the trigger on Maurizio Sarri after their game against Tottenham later this month, provided things don’t improve till then.

The Sky Sports expert believes that the board will take action when they start to realise that the top-four chances are slipping away.

Sarri’s future is a hot topic of discussion since the Blues’ 6-0 thrashing defeat at the hands of Manchester City. The Italian had a great start to life at Stamford Bridge, but things have unraveled in the past few months.

While the 4-0 humiliation at Bournemouth was one thing, a drubbing against a direct rival would hurt even more to the Chelsea fans.

Despite making strides in the Europa League, Carragher believes club owner Roman Abramovich will be aiming at Champions League qualification.

The former Liverpool man reckons the manager could get the sack if he loses to Tottenham. He said: “I would like to see them stick with him and not make this change, certainly in the middle of the season.

“But unfortunately we know that these next fixtures, because of Chelsea’s history, you would imagine could be vital to whether Sarri gets the chance [to carry on].

“I actually think Chelsea, and not just Chelsea but a lot of the clubs now, the top four is everything, getting into the Champions League, even sometimes more than a cup final.

“I actually think the Tottenham game is huge as opposed to the others.

“I think if he lost a couple of the others it wouldn’t be the end of the world for him.

“I think the Tottenham game, I think as soon as Chelsea’s hierarchy feel they could miss out on the top four, that’s when they may make that change.”

Chelsea have a Europa League last-32 tie first leg against Malmo awaiting this Thursday. Then they have a FA Cup tie against Manchester United next Monday, before facing Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final and ending this month with a game against Spurs.
