Pep Guadiola defends Maurizio Sarri’s tactics and says it is misunderstood by people

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola defends Maurizio Sarri’s tactics at Chelsea and claims that it is misunderstood by most people.

Guadiola was full of praise of the Chelsea manager when he was at Napoli, when City met the Italian club in the group stage of Champions League last season.

Sarri arrived at Stamford Bridge last summer and had a great start to life. He avoided a defeat in the opening 12 games, but things have wobbled in the past couple of months.

As a consequence, people have started to question the manager’s tactics at the club and around.

But Guardiola feels Sarri’s team and tactics have been judged harshly.

Speaking to the media ahead of City’s game against Chelsea, the Spaniard said: “As a spectator and coach I try to figure out what the manager is trying to do.

“I see Chelsea and I can understand what they want to do. And after I see them, they do it. Maybe for other people they don’t know exactly what they want to do. But they do it.

“And when you see the team, the players that they have, the bench – it is Chelsea my friend.

“The best strikers in the world are there, the midfielders there are the best in the world, good goalkeeper, experienced defenders. They know exactly what they want to do. Tomorrow is a final for us.”

Chelsea and Manchester City clash on Sunday at the Etihad in what is anticipated to be a blockbuster match.
