Marcos Alonso says Chelsea have only themselves to blame for derby defeat

Chelsea’s left-back Marcos Alonso has come down hard on his teammates in wake of the 2-0 defeat against Arsenal on Saturday, saying that the Blues have only themselves to blame for the lacklustre performance.

Chelsea failed to get a grip on the game as first-half goals from Alexandre Lacazette and Laurent Koscielny completed an act of sweet revenge for the Gunners, having lost 3-2 away from home in the reverse fixture earlier in the season.

And Alonso, who was partly to blame for the first goal, called upon his teammates to take a lesson from the defeat.

“We made silly mistakes,” Alonso said after the game.

“We provoked them to gain confidence and come to press us because we were making mistakes. In the second half we tried but it was too late and we couldn’t score.

“When you lose, you learn. We have to analyse the game and improve quickly because there is no time to think. We have to perform again in four days.”

Chelsea had a golden opportunity on their hands to go nine points clear of Arsenal but the Blues are now only three points ahead of the Gunners and face serious competition for the final Champions League spot.

“It was a good opportunity,” Alonso admitted.

“We wasted it and now we have to work even harder to stay in a Champions League position and win games. It has to motivate us.”
