Sky Sports specialist Dharmesh Sett has lifted the lid on how transfers in Chelsea work and why the system is based on one person’s opinion.

“What we do know is the final decision on a transfer rests on Marina Granovskaia,” Sheth said. If Sarri likes a player and Granovskaia agrees, the wheels are put in motion and it goes to the very top where it’s signed off by Mr Roman Abramovich.”

“This is how it works – transfers at Chelsea are decided between the manager and the sporting director. Since Michael Emenalo left the club as sporting director in 2017, Marina Granovskaia has become an all powerful figure at Stamford Bridge. She also oversees the academy and scouting network as well.”

“Now it would explain why there are differing views over who the club wants to bring in. Sarri’s choice is not necessarily the same as Granovskaia’s, as we’ve seen with Gonzalo Higuain. It’s thought that Bournemouth’s Callum Wilson would fit the bill as far as Chelsea are concerned.”

“We know Bournemouth have said he’s not for sale but if you look at factors like his age, he’s 26, he’s English, he would provide a sell-on value as well, he has experience in the Premier League. It appears with right now that Sarri is waiting for Granovskaia’s approval before it goes ahead with the deal to bring in Gonzalo Higuain.”
