Sarri calls for more determination from his players ahead of Carabao Cup tie

Chelsea are set to lock horns with London rivals Tottenham Hotspur in the first leg of the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup at Wembley on Tuesday night.

The Blues strung together an impressive unbeaten run of 12 games in the Premier League, which eventually came to an end with the 3-1 humbling at the hands of Spurs late in November at Wembley.

Chelsea were well and truly outplayed by Spurs that day, with the Lilywhites exposing the flaws in Sarri’s 4-3-3 formation courtesy of Mauricio Pochettino’s tactical masterstroke in the middle of the park.

Sarri has hinted at a possible change in tactics heading into the Carabao Cup game but has also pointed out that the players need to raise their game and show more determination than they did last time around.

Sarri said: “First of all we need to approach the match in another way because we lost it in the first 15 minutes. They were more aggressive, more determined. We know very well if we approach it the same, there is no solution.

“I want to speak to them before about this or it is very useless to speak about tactics. Before tactics, we need the same level of determination.

“We have to change tactics as well I think. He (Pochettino) played with an offensive midfield behind two strikers, we needed to play more outside than inside because the spaces were outside.”

Sarri has revealed that Willian (calf), Pedro (hamstring) and Olivier Giroud have all returned to training and could face Spurs.
