Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri has made it clear that Gary Cahill will have to leave the club if he wants more playing time.

Sarri’s introduction to Stamford Bridge has revolutionized football at Chelsea and the Blues are now in need of technical defenders rather than the hard-tackling ball winners of the yesteryear.

“I respect him very much because he has won everything with this club,” Sarri told reporters. I have to do my job. Every match, I have to choose. For me, he is not able to [be] on the bench. Maybe he is the best in the box, but our defenders may play 100 or 110 balls in a match so I need very technical defenders.”

Moreover, Cahill is already in the middle of the final year of his contract and it is widely known that the Blues hierarchy do not offer more than a year’s extension on contracts for players north of 30.

“He is in the last year of the contract,” said Sarri. “He has to decide for a new contract here or another club. For the over 30 [players] the club usually offers only one-year contracts. If he has an offer of three years, he can of course choose something [a transfer away from Chelsea]. It doesn’t depend if I am sentimental or not.”

This would mean that it is more probable than not Chelsea would be parting ways with their current club captain and another member of their famed Champions League winning squad come February next year.
